🥬 Classic Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

Ingredients

  • 1 large head green cabbage
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ cup uncooked white rice
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ cup beef broth

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the cabbage leaves and blanch them for 2–3 minutes, until softened. Drain and cool.
  3. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, uncooked rice, onion, garlic, egg, salt, pepper, paprika, and Italian seasoning.
  4. Place about 2–3 tablespoons of filling near the bottom of each cabbage leaf. Fold in the sides and roll tightly.
  5. Mix the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and beef broth.
  6. Spread some sauce in the bottom of a baking dish. Arrange the cabbage rolls seam-side down and pour the remaining sauce over them.
  7. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 1½–2 hours, until the cabbage is tender and the filling is cooked through.
  8. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
