Ingredients
- 4 beef cube steaks
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp paprika
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- 3 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2½ cups beef broth
- ½ cup milk
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp flour
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Method
- Season the steaks: Mix flour, salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Coat each steak generously in the seasoned flour.
- Brown the steaks: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the steaks for about 3–4 minutes per side until nicely browned. Remove and set aside.
- Cook the onions: Add butter and sliced onions to the skillet. Cook for 4–5 minutes until softened. Add garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
- Make the gravy: Sprinkle in 2 tbsp flour and stir for 1 minute. Slowly whisk in the beef broth and milk, scraping up the browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
- Season: Add Worcestershire sauce and adjust salt and pepper.
- Simmer: Return the steaks to the skillet. Cover and simmer on low heat for 25–35 minutes, until tender and the gravy is thick and rich.
- Serve: Spoon plenty of brown gravy over the steaks. Serve with mashed potatoes, green beans, or biscuits.
Tip: Keep the heat low while simmering—the slow cooking is what makes country-style steak tender and flavorful.
