Ingredients
- 1 large head green cabbage
- 1 lb ground beef
- ½ cup uncooked white rice
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ cup beef broth
Method
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the cabbage leaves and blanch them for 2–3 minutes, until softened. Drain and cool.
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, uncooked rice, onion, garlic, egg, salt, pepper, paprika, and Italian seasoning.
- Place about 2–3 tablespoons of filling near the bottom of each cabbage leaf. Fold in the sides and roll tightly.
- Mix the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and beef broth.
- Spread some sauce in the bottom of a baking dish. Arrange the cabbage rolls seam-side down and pour the remaining sauce over them.
- Cover tightly with foil and bake for 1½–2 hours, until the cabbage is tender and the filling is cooked through.
- Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
