Old-Fashioned Amish Cinnamon Bread Recipe

This Old-Fashioned Amish Cinnamon Bread is soft, buttery, and swirled with a sweet cinnamon-sugar filling. With its tender crumb and irresistible aroma, it’s perfect for breakfast, brunch, or an afternoon snack with coffee or tea.

Ingredients

For the Bread

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ⅓ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Cinnamon Swirl

  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Optional Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the ⅓ cup sugar and 1 tablespoon cinnamon. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  4. In another bowl, whisk the egg, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
  7. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over the batter.
  8. Add the remaining batter, then sprinkle the remaining cinnamon-sugar on top.
  9. Use a butter knife to gently swirl the cinnamon mixture through the batter.
  10. Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  11. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  12. If desired, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla to make the glaze and drizzle over the cooled bread.
