Amish Onion Patties

Servings: 6–8

Ingredients

  • 2 large yellow onions, finely chopped
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • 1 large egg
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Method

  1. Finely chop the onions and place them in a large bowl.
  2. Add the flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Mix well.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and melted butter.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the onions and stir until everything is well combined. The mixture should be thick enough to hold together.
  5. Heat about ¼ inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  6. Drop heaping spoonfuls of the onion mixture into the hot oil and gently flatten them into patties.
  7. Fry for 3–4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Transfer to a paper-towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  9. Serve hot as a side dish or snack.
